Institute with Anshe Emeth 2021-2022

ART

Using the forms of mural, symbols, text, poetry, and narrative, students have created artwork that reflects their research and oral history analysis on the intersection of the Anshe Emeth community with the larger New Brunswick community. Their artwork and research with the help of RH Doaz was transformed into the two street Hamsa murals displayed below. The students hope the murals serve as conversation starters for the community members to share their aspirations for the New Brunswick community.

Advocacy

Teaching artists led the students through personal reflection, deep listening, oral history analysis, and cross-cultural meeting exercises to discern a suitable advocacy theme for their mural project. They felt that a mural that represented acceptance, kindness, and safety was necessary to strengthen and unify the intersections of all the communities within New Brunswick.

Collective Poem of Blessing

May the people be united in peace
May this peace spread love to all

May this love promote common understanding May this common understanding inspire us

May this inspiration serve as a blessing of protection.

Community

The students explored the following questions about their relationship to community: What does it mean to be part of the Anshe Emeth Community and the Greater New Brunswick Community? What curiosities do you have about the predominantly Latine Community in New Brunswick and how the Anshe Emeth Community intersects? How can your understanding of your Jewish faith and identity bring you into better understanding of others?

The Anshe Emeth students also shared in a cross-cultural food sharing event, where they met and shared with students from the Esperanza community. Together they wrote and shared a collective poem of blessing for their mural unveiling.
