Summer institute with Indian Cultural Society
Art
Using the forms of devised theater oLAB Arts Institute programs guide students art creation that reflect deepened understanding of themselves and their community. This program will culminate in an oriignal 30-minute short play and students will be able to invite family/friends into the studio space to share their work and will lead a talkback with guests on their process. All of the coLAB Arts Teaching Artist Faculty hold an MFA, or BFA in arts or equivalent professional experience. Our faculty are working artists in the NY/NJ/PA region and are regularly producing professional projects in addition to their expert work as educators.
AdvocaCy
In partnership with the Indian Cultural Society, students will work with university level public history research, as well as social emotional response activities that engage in thoughtful exploration of racial and social justice themes in contemporary culture. Through a special partnership with the Lost Souls Memorial Project the final theater piece will have a special focus on the experience of African-American New Jerseyans and their stories of resilience in the fight for equitable and equal treatment from the eighteenth century through modern day.
Community
This curriculum will connect students’ lived experiences in New Jersey. Students will reflect on their own culture, identity, and aspirations and find points of connection with the diverse identities of their NJ neighbors. Students will be asked to consider: How are you unique from others in your community? What similarities do you share with others? What is possible when diverse communities work together for collective impact? These answers will be part of the structure of the final play.
"My daughter always gets good grades, but her teachers say that she does not interact with many of the other kids. She does not do many after school activities and usually comes right home after school. She came home so excited the first day of this program, and I can see that she is participating and making new friends. I am so proud of her, and can’t thank you enough for giving her this opportunity." - Parent of a coLAB Arts Institute Student
