Rachel Schaeffer is the founder of Ray of Sunshine Crafting Co., a Philadelphia and South Jersey-based creative workshop company making crafting approachable, social and meaningful for people of all ages and experience levels. Through beginner-friendly craft workshops, senior programming and private events, Ray of Sunshine creates opportunities for people to explore their creativity, learn new skills and build connections through the shared experience of making something by hand.
At the heart of Ray of Sunshine is a simple belief: crafting isn’t just cute; it’s connection, community, and wellness. Each workshop is intentionally designed for beginners, including those who may not consider themselves creative. Participants can come with friends or attend solo, learn something new and enjoy dedicated time to slow down, be present and create alongside others.
Rachel designs and teaches a rotating variety of hands-on workshops, including pet embroidery, beaded embroidery, mosaics, wreath making and seasonal crafts. Ray of Sunshine workshops are hosted throughout Philadelphia and South Jersey at breweries, wineries, small businesses and community spaces, as well as through private events for groups, celebrations and organizations.
Senior programming has become an especially meaningful part of Ray of Sunshine’s community work. Rachel develops recurring, accessible craft experiences for older adults that introduce participants to new projects, materials and techniques while creating opportunities for continued learning, creative expression and social connection. These programs reflect the same philosophy behind every Ray of Sunshine workshop: creativity should be accessible at every age and every skill level.
Rachel’s connection to crafting began at a young age, giving her an early appreciation for creativity as more than the act of making something beautiful. She experienced how working with your hands can encourage mindfulness, provide a restorative break from the demands of everyday life and create natural opportunities for people to connect. Her background in industrial design and human-centered design continues to shape her approach today, with each workshop thoughtfully designed around both the project and the experience of the people creating it.
Whether someone attends a public workshop with friends, comes solo, participates in a senior program or gathers for a private event, Rachel’s goal is the same: to create welcoming experiences where people feel comfortable trying something new, connecting with others and discovering the joy of making something themselves.
