October 2026 - April Cooper

April Cooper is a visual artist whose work explores Black social spaces in and around New Jersey. Through painting, she documents the gathering places, traditions, and shared experiences that bring Black communities together. Her work celebrates the cultural significance of these spaces as sites of connection, joy, identity, and belonging.

Her ongoing series, Black Social Spaces, examines the everyday environments where Black culture is lived, shared, and passed between generations. From neighborhood block parties and family gatherings to skating rinks and dance floors, Cooper draws attention to the places and experiences that hold collective meaning. Her paintings invite viewers to consider how these spaces shape community, preserve cultural traditions, and create lasting memories.

Cooper combines research, digital sketching, and traditional painting techniques to develop compositions rooted in cultural observation and personal interpretation. Through her practice, she seeks to preserve and celebrate moments of Black life that are deeply meaningful yet often underrepresented in the broader visual arts landscape.

As an artist committed to documenting Black cultural experiences, Cooper creates work that honors the beauty of everyday life and recognizes the importance of spaces where people come together to celebrate, connect, and build community.
