Jennifer Cortes is a Mexican business owner and resident of New Brunswick. She discusses how community work has helped her, her family, and her business feel supported and has made her and her business feel like a valued part of the community. Jennifer tells her story and that of her family.

Good afternoon, I'm Ricarda Garcia from the Teatro Esperanza Project, uh, today I'm with Jennifer Cortes. It's August 20, 2023, she's, uh, a business owner. A food restaurant on French Street.
Hi, my name is Jennifer Cortés, uh, I'm 33 years old. I was born on August 19th in the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey to Mexican parents, both originally from the state of Oaxaca. Four months after I was born, my mother returned to– Her birthplace is Santa Maria Zacatepec, Oaxaca... and it was in this beautiful place where I grew up and went to school until I was 12 years old, uh [pause].
At that time we lived with my grandmother, uh, a family made up mostly of women. My mother has nine siblings, six women and three men, and– I must emphasize that they are strong, working women, uh, pure fighting women, eh, my grandmother always instilled in them work, respect. And I think it has been fundamental for all of us, that I saw, those of us who grew up in that home, because they have made us the people we are today.
Thanks to my grandmother. Thanks to my mom, uh. When she traveled, uh, came back to Mexico– She separated from my dad and was father and mother to me, uh. All my admiration goes to her, since she, with hard work and effort, always gave me, uh, everything I needed to get ahead.
So, for me she is, uh, my wonder, uh, Wonder Woman, my Wonder Woman because without her, well, I would not be here.Uh, she who gave me life, uh, and who together with my grandmother instilled in me many beautiful things that I am proud of today, uh. And as I told you, it is practically a family of women and women who are very, very fighters, uh. At the age of 12, uh, I returned to the United States. Eighth grade at New Brunswick School, leaving my mom behind in my country in her home country, uh [pause].
I graduated from New Brunswick high school in 2008, in 2009, I took two years at middle– Middlesex College.In 2017 I graduated in cosmetology, not thinking that years later I would not practice as a cosmetologist, but as a, uh, business owner. I have a small business located on 4 Jersey Avenue in New Brunswick called Sabor Express. It's Dominican food, uh, and thanks to my husband, we were able to– we were able to buy it. I was able to go into the business world, something that I had always, uh, been a little afraid of, but today it's what I do, uh. I worked 10 years in an assisted living, uh, which is like an, ah, it's, uh, assistance for the elderly.
And I worked there for 10 years giving medication. When the COVID pandemic came I was out of work, I was at home for two years from 2019 until 2021 when I got the opportunity to buy Sabor Express. And with the support of my husband and my family I was able to do it.
And I am really the first of my family that was able to get a business here in this country, the country of dreams, the country where those who want to can achieve their dreams with dedication, with work, with effort, and above all with their feet on the ground.

Uh, uh, I work, uh, I have people that work together with me. We are not, they are not employees. They're co-workers that I thank for the support because really, uh, without them, well, I wouldn't be there. Sabor express wouldn't exist, and I need them as much as they need the job, right? So God has blessed me by putting me in the way, wonderful people, people with great hearts, eh?
And from whom I learn something new every day. Something new and also from whom they teach me day by day... How beautiful humility is, respect, team work, because that is one of the greatest things, uh, why I always, uh, I like to make sure that the people who work with me feel at home, feel at ease, feel confident and that we are a family, because at the end of the day, we share more time at work than what we share at home. I am the mother of three children, uh, I married a wonderful person. Thank God, uh– We have been married for 14 years, three children, a 10 year old, a 6 year old and a 2 year old baby girl. Eh, the truth is that God has rewarded me and blessed me in all aspects. Hey, and as I told you, with the support of my husband, today I am here working at French Street and I love it.
I love being there, because every day I can, uh, see the needs that exist in this city, uh, collaborate day by day with the people. And with the countrymen and not only Mexicans, eh? Guatemalans, Hondurans of all– of all places, eh? It has cost me a lot. It has not been easy. It really hasn't been easy.
Because when I came back here, I lived with an aunt, uh, I am very grateful to her. Well, since she gave me, she provided me, uh, she gave me, uh, education, until I was able to bring my mother. When I turned 18, 21 years old, sorry, um, I asked for my mom and that's when she was able to come back to this country, after I was four months old she left for Mexico, she never came back until I petitioned her for her residency, which was when I turned 21. And since then, uh, she hasn't left my side. And she's always supporting me. And even when she was living in Mexico and I was living here, she never stopped supporting me in all the decisions, uh, in all the, uh, things. She was always with me and I am very fortunate to have her.
I love, I really love to be able to collaborate with organizations, especially to help the community, because I believe, and I am aware of the lack– the need that there is, uh, of people who have the desire to be able to help to make a better community. Because we have children, and every parent wants the best for their children.
An excellent job has been done with the community and it should be applauded. It has to be, uh, uh, shown to the people, because I believe that the more people know about it, the more they become infected with the desire to be able to– to want to help, to work. And I believe that together we can achieve it, together we can make a change, together we can fulfill a dream because dreams can be fulfilled. I never imagined I would be, as I told you, uh, here as a business owner, and thanks to God, God put in my way, wonderful people to work and show an effort. Today I am here collaborating with the city, collaborating with my fellow paisanos, and truly that fills me with great emotion, with great joy, because I know that a little grain of sand can make a difference.

Buenas tardes, soy Ricarda García del proyecto de teatro esperanza, eh– Hoy estoy con Jennifer cortés.
Es el 20 de agosto del 2023, es, eh, una persona que tiene su negocio. Un restaurante de comida en la calle French Street.
Hola, mi nombre es Jennifer cortés, eh– Tengo 33 años de edad. Nací el 19 de Agosto de en la ciudad de new Brunswick, New Jersey de padres mexicanos, ambos originarios del estado de Oaxaca. A los cuatro meses de yo haber nacido mi madre regresó a– Su lugar de nacimiento Santa María Zacatepe, Oaxaca– y fue en este hermoso lugar en donde yo crecí y fui a la escuela hasta los 12 años, eh–
En ese tiempo vivimos con mi abuelita, eh– Una familia formada mayormente de mujeres. Mi madre tiene nueve hermanos, seis mujeres y tres hombres y– Debo destacar que son puras mujeres trabajadoras, eh– Puras mujeres luchadoras, eh, mi abuela siempre les inculcó el trabajo, el respeto– Y creo que ha sido fundamental para todos los que vi, los que nos criamos en ese hogar porque nos han hecho las personas que somos hoy en día.
Gracias a mi abuela. Gracias a mi mamá, eh– A los cuando ella viajó, eh, regresó para México– Se separó de mi papá y fue padre y madre para mí, eh– Toda mi admiración es para ella, puesto que ella, con trabajo y esfuerzo siempre me dio, eh, todo lo necesario para sacarme adelante.
Entonces, para mí es, eh, mi wonder, uh, wonder woman, mi mujer maravilla porque sin ella, pues yo no estuviera aquí– Eh, ella que me dio la vida, eh, y que me junto con mi abuela, me inculcaron muchas cosas bonitas de las que hoy me enorgullezco, eh– Y como les dije, es una familia prácticamente de mujeres y mujeres muy, muy luchadoras, eh– A los 12 años, eh– Regresé a Estados Unidos. Cursando el octavo grado en la escuela de new Brunswick, dejando a mi mamá atrás en mi país en el país de origen de ella, eh–
Me gradué de la new Brunswick high school en el 2008, en el 2009, cursé dos años en el middle Middlesex College– en el 2017 me gradué en cosmetología, sin pensar qué años más tarde, no ejerceria como cosmetóloga, sino como eh, dueña de negocio. Tengo un pequeño negocio localizado en la 4 Jersey Avenue en New Brunswick que se llama sabor express. Es de comida dominicana, eh– Y gracias a mi esposo, pudimos– Pudimos comprarlo. Pude incursionar en el mundo de los negocios, algo de lo que yo siempre había, eh, estado un poco temerosa de– pero hoy en día es lo que hago, eh– Trabajé 10 años en un asisted living, eh– Que es como un ah, es– Eh asistencia para los ancianos.
Y ahí trabajé 10 años dando medicamento. Cuando vino la pandemia del COVID, me quedé sin trabajo, duré en casa dos años desde el 2019 hasta el 2021 que me llegó la oportunidad de comprar sabor express. Y junto al apoyo de mi esposo y de mi familia, pude lograrlo. Y realmente soy la primera de mi familia que pudo obtener un negocio aquí en este país, el país de los sueños, el país donde el que quiere puede lograr sus sueños con dedicación, con trabajo, con esfuerzo y sobre todo con los pies en la tierra.

Eh, eh, traba, eh– Tengo personas que trabajan junto conmigo. No somos, no son empleados. Son compañeros de trabajo a los que agradezco. Por el apoyo porque realmente eh, sin ellos– Pues yo no estuviera ahí. Sabor express no existiera y tanto los necesito yo como ellos al trabajo, no? Entonces Dios me ha bendecido poniéndome en el camino, personas maravillosas, personas de gran corazón, eh?
Y de las cuales yo aprendo todos los días. Algo nuevo y también de las cuales me enseñan día a día– Lo bonito que es la humildad, el respeto, el trabajo en equipo, porque esa es una de las mayores cosas, eh, por las que yo siempre, eh, me gusta estar al pendiente de que la gente que trabaje conmigo se sienta como en casa, se sienta a gusto, se sienta con confianza y que somos una familia, porque al final del día, pues compartimos más tiempo en el trabajo que lo que compartimos en la casa. Soy madre de tres hijos, eh– Me casé con una persona maravillosa. Gracias a Dios, eh– Tenemos 14 años casados, tres hijos, uno de 10 años, otro de 6 años y una bebe de 2 años. Eh– La verdad que Dios me ha premiado me ha bendecido en todos los aspectos. Eh, y como les comenté junto al apoyo de mi esposo, pues hoy en día estoy aquí trabajando en la French Street y me encanta.
Me encanta el poder estar ahí, porque cada día puedo, eh, ver las necesa– las necesidades que hay en esta ciudad, eh– Colaborar día a día con la gente. Y con los paisanos y no solo mexicanos, eh? Guatemaltecos, Hondureños de de todos, de todos los lugares, eh? Me ha costado mucho. No ha sido fácil. La verdad no ha sido fácil.
Porque cuando yo regresé aquí, viví con una tía, eh– Mucho le agradezco. Pues, puesto que ella me dio, me siguió, eh– Me eh, dando estudios– hasta que yo pude traer a mi mamá. Cuando yo cumplí 18, 21 años, perdón, eh? Pedí a mi mamá y fue cuando ella pudo regresar a este país, después de que yo tenía cuatro meses que ella se fue para México, jamás volvió hasta cuando yo le hice lala petición para su residencia, que fue cuando yo cumplí 21 años. Y desde entonces, eh, no se ha ido de mi lado. Y siempre está apoyándome. Y aun estando ella viviendo en México y yo acá, nunca dejó de apoyarme en todas las decisiones, eh– En todas las eh, las cosas. La verdad siempre estuvo conmigo y soy muy afortunada de tenerla.
Me encanta, me encanta mucho poder colaborar con organizaciones, especialmente para ayudar a la comunidad, porque creo, y estoy consciente de la falta de necesidad que hay– eh, de personas que tengan las ganas de poder ayudar de poder este hacer una comunidad mejor. Porque pues tenemos hijos y y todo padre quiere lo mejor para sus hijos.
Y si no hacemos algo hoy– Cuándo, cuándo podremos hacerlo? Cómo nuestros hijos crecerán? Cómo será el mañana para ellos? Entonces, yo creo que tenemos que actuar ahora para poder tener un mejor mañana, eh? Gracias a estas organizaciones, pues creo que se ha hecho y trabajado.. Se ha hecho un, han hecho un trabajo excelente con la comunidad y tiene que ser aplaudido.
Tiene que ser, eh, eh, mostrado a las personas porque yo creo que entre más personas lo saben, se contagia de las ganas, de poder querer ayudar, trabajar. Y creo que juntos podemos lograrlo– juntos podemos hacer un cambio– juntos podemos cumplir un sueño porque los sueños sí se pueden cumplir. Nunca yo me imaginé estar, como les dije, eh, aquí como una dueña de negocio, y gracias a que, Dios puso mi camino, gente maravillosa al trabajo y al esfuerzo. Hoy estoy aquí colaborando con la ciudad, colaborando con mis paisanos y de verdad que eso a mí me llena de mucha emoción, de mucha alegría, porque yo sé que un granito de arena puede hacer la diferencia.
